Flags that look alike, ranked by how often players mixed them up
I make GeoQuiz, a geography quiz app. Between 6 June and 6 October 2026, signed-in players answered 20,117 flag questions, each with four names to pick from, and they picked the right name 62% of the time. I went through the misses to see which flags people mix up. They pile up on a few pairs.
Notes on the numbers
-
Iraq is the one flag where more players picked a wrong name than the right one: 47 of 92 picked Yemen, and only 31 picked Iraq. A line of Arabic writing is the only difference between the two flags, and on a phone it is small.
-
Only 50% of players shown Australia’s flag picked Australia. The rest split between New Zealand (18%), Fiji (16%) and Papua New Guinea (15%), and each of those shares the Union Jack or the Southern Cross with it.
-
The two Congos have flags that look nothing alike, and players still swapped them: 31% one way, 24% the other. My guess is the names do it.
-
Slovakia and Slovenia go wrong both ways at almost the same rate, 22% and 23%. Shown Slovenia’s flag, another 20% picked Russia, which has the same three stripes and no shield.
-
The best-known flags were Sri Lanka (86%), Mongolia (86%), Canada (85%) and Japan (85%), all within a point of each other.
The 15 pairs players confuse most
Each row is a flag and the wrong name players picked most often for it. The percentage is out of everyone who saw that flag.
