Four flags show the Southern Cross, so learn how each draws it. Australia has six white stars: five for the constellation plus the large seven-pointed Commonwealth Star under the Union Jack. New Zealand has four red stars with white borders and no Commonwealth Star. Papua New Guinea puts a white Southern Cross on black beside a golden bird-of-paradise on red. Samoa keeps it small, in a blue canton on a red field.
Two more use a Union Jack: Fiji on light blue with a shield, and Tuvalu on light blue with nine yellow stars laid out like its islands. Tonga has no Union Jack; its red flag has a red cross in a white canton. The rest are one-of-a-kind: Kiribati's frigatebird over a rising sun and waves, Nauru's single yellow line (the equator) with a twelve-pointed star, Palau's full moon on blue, Micronesia's four stars, the Marshall Islands' two diagonal bands, orange and white, Vanuatu's Y with a boar's tusk, and the Solomon Islands' five stars on a blue-and-green diagonal.
