Red discs first. Japan is a plain red sun on white. Bangladesh is a red disc on green, set slightly towards the hoist. Laos is a white disc on a blue band between two red bands. Palau's yellow disc on blue belongs to Oceania but gets mixed in constantly.

The Gulf and the Levant share the Pan-Arab colours (red, white, black and green), so read the shapes: Kuwait has a black trapezoid at the hoist, the UAE a vertical red bar, Jordan a red triangle with a white star, Iraq green calligraphy on its white band. Qatar and Bahrain both use a white serrated edge; Bahrain's is red with five points, Qatar's is maroon with nine. Saudi Arabia is green with the shahada and a sword.

Beyond that, the memorable ones: Nepal is the world's only non-rectangular national flag, Bhutan has a white dragon, Sri Lanka a golden lion, Cambodia the towers of Angkor Wat, South Korea the red-and-blue taegeuk, Kazakhstan a sun and steppe eagle on sky blue, Turkmenistan a vertical carpet stripe, Kyrgyzstan a sun with a yurt crown. Indonesia is red over white, the same as Monaco and the reverse of Poland, while Singapore adds a crescent and five stars to its red band.
