How to learn the map of Oceania
This map asks for seven places, and three of them are easy. Australia is the continent-sized country. New Zealand is the pair of long islands about 2,000 km to its southeast, across the Tasman Sea. Papua New Guinea is the eastern half of the large island directly north of Australia. The western half of that island belongs to Indonesia, which is part of Asia and not in this round, so tap the right-hand half.
The other four sit in a chain that runs southeast from Papua New Guinea, and remembering the order is most of the work. First come the Solomon Islands, a double row of long islands just east of Papua New Guinea. Next is Vanuatu, a thin line of islands further to the southeast. New Caledonia lies southwest of Vanuatu: one long, narrow main island with smaller islands off its ends. Fiji is the furthest east of the four, with two large islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, and many small ones around them.
Most wrong taps happen between neighbours in that chain. If you land on Vanuatu when you meant New Caledonia, remember that New Caledonia is one big island and Vanuatu is a string of smaller ones running north to south. Fiji is about 1,000 km east of Vanuatu, with open sea between them. New Caledonia is a French territory, not a country, but it is large enough to show on the map, so it is part of the round.
Oceania has 14 sovereign countries, and six of them are on this map. The other eight, Palau, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Samoa and Tonga, are groups of small islands spread across thousands of kilometres of ocean, too small to tap here. Their flags are in the Flags of Oceania quiz, and the world map quiz asks for the same seven places in a wider view.
