US state capitals that aren't the big city
Most people miss the same ten. California's capital is Sacramento, not Los Angeles. New York's is Albany, not New York City. Florida's is Tallahassee, not Miami. Illinois is Springfield, not Chicago. Pennsylvania is Harrisburg, not Philadelphia. Washington is Olympia, not Seattle. Texas is Austin, not Houston or Dallas. Nevada is Carson City, not Las Vegas. Oregon is Salem, not Portland. Michigan is Lansing, not Detroit.
Two traps are about names. Kansas City is in Missouri (and Missouri's capital is Jefferson City); Kansas's capital is Topeka. Oklahoma City and Indianapolis are the easy ones, since the name gives it away. Then there are the small ones worth memorising outright: Montpelier (Vermont) is the smallest state capital, Pierre (South Dakota) is pronounced "peer", Juneau (Alaska) cannot be reached by road, and Honolulu is the only capital on an island.
